Residential Doors

From functional and simple to elegant and luxurious, doors have come a long way. No longer is a door an afterthought or something that is only functional. Doors have become a design element in their own right. With so many different styles, materials and finishes to choose from, there is a door to suit every taste.

There are many types of residential doors available on the market today, from traditional wooden doors to modern composite doors. With such a wide range of styles and materials to choose from, it can be mind-boggling to know where to start.

At Styleglaze, we have over 30 years of experience in the door industry, so we’re well-placed to offer advice on choosing the right doors for your home.

Back Doors & Patio Doors

At first glance, it may seem that back doors and patio doors are all the same. After all, they all have a (usually white) frame and glass. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The most popular colour is indeed white but that’s often all that is in common for different ranges of doors.

The longevity of your door will depend on the quality of uPVC or aluminium, the amount of aluminium within the frame, the way that the glazing is sealed, and many other technical details that go into making a secure, durable, quality door.

Make a Statement

An entrance door is more than a way into the house. It is the way guests are welcomed, it is a symbol of the homeowners’ taste, and it sets the tone for the rest of the house. In short, choosing the right entrance door is important, not least of all, you see it every time you walk up your path to let yourself in.

There are many factors to consider when choosing an entrance door. In Daventry, the most popular choice is a composite door. A composite door has everything you need. Style, value, durability, and security.

Patio Doors

The right patio doors make such a difference to the way you live. They bring the outside in and can completely transform a room. And with so many different styles to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect doors for your home.

Space is the biggest influence on the choice. Sliding doors if you want the doors to stay in their own space. Bifold doors if you want to fully open the doors. French doors for smaller space, often to replace existing windows without changing the lintel.

White Sliding doors

Sliding Doors

Sliding patio doors provide plenty of natural light and uninterrupted views. Modern gliding systems are exceptionally smooth and fitted with safety features to protect your family. Sliding doors are available in uPVC and aluminium. Sliding doors are mostly thought of as two doors with one sliding to the side at any time. Sliding doors are a great choice if you want to maximise the amount of space in a room. They work well in small rooms as you don’t need to allow space for the doors to open.

Aluminium has allowed for wide installations with several panes to create panoramic views.

Bifold Doors

Bifold doors are a great way to open up a room and connect the indoors with the outdoors.

Bifold doors are made up of a series of panels that fold back on themselves. This means they can be opened up fully, making them ideal for rooms where you want to create a sense of space that flows seamlessly into the garden.

The choice of where you place the master door gives you the flexibility of using it simply as a back door when you just want to step outside without opening up the whole wall.

French Doors

French doors are a classic choice that can add charm and character to any home. They open inwards or outwards and are available in a variety of different styles to personalise your choice.

French doors are most popular for the back of one room as a replacement for windows. The double doors allow for more light and air flow and give a sense of space as the view flows to the outside. Double doors can also work well across a wide expanse with pillars between sets of doors.

Back Doors

The humble back door has come a long way. No longer is it an afterthought or just a functional door to the garden. In many homes, the back door is now seen as an important design feature in its own right.

Just like an entrance door, a back door can say a lot about the style of your home. It can also be a practical solution for linking the indoors with the outdoors.

We have seen increasing requests recently, for back doors that match the front door, often with a slightly different design such as a stable door or glazed top half.

Door Choices

Residential doors are broken down into two categories. Front Doors and back doors. Although there are no set rules about the doors you choose, generally speaking, the front door will be mostly solid and made out of wood, composite, uPVC, aluminium or a combination. Although you may choose to glaze sections, often this is obscure or decorated to preserve some privacy. Back doors, whether they are simple kitchen entrances or substantial patio doors, tend to be mostly glazed.

Material Choices for Front Doors

The most popular choice for front doors is composite. When looking at a balance of style, options, security, durability and value, composite will come out top. uPVC is cheaper but there will be some compromise in at least one of the standards offered by composite. Aluminium front doors are always the architect’s choice. They are high-end and can be designed with a range of features such as fingerprint recognition, auto-locking, thermal insulation, and LED lights.

Aluminium or uPVC Doors?

When compared to aluminium patio doors and back doors, uPVC doors come out on top in terms of cost and are an estimated 20% cheaper than aluminium. You also have more variety for quality standards with uPVC. You can buy extremely cheap doors but they are rarely worth it in the long term. Stretching the budget a bit could prove well worth it when build quality and finish are taken into account regardless of which material you choose.
